Religion as an excuse for war

WWII

There is no doubt that world war two was religiously motivated both in Germany and Japan. The emperor of Japan named himself a demigod and used his spiritual influence to rally his armies.

Hitler was a devout Catholic and used the religious angle to motivate the Nazi forces in a country with a Catholic majority.

Regardless of Hitler’s private personal opinions concerning religion, his public views which were included in his WWII campaign were that his reasons for his actions were based on his religious belief.
This is expressed throughout Mein Kampf and in many of his public addresses.

“Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.” - Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf)

There is a common misconception and what I consider a straight fabrication of anti-atheistic Christian propaganda that Hitler was in-fact an Atheist. Anybody that has read any history on WWII will know that this is not true.

“We were convinced that the people needs and requires this faith.  We have therefore undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few theoretical declarations: we have stamped it out.” -Adolf Hitler (Berlin Oct 25, 1933)
