Currently in the United States, the Republican party commands the votes of nearly all Conservative Christian voters, because of their adherence to the intolerant interpretations surrounding issues such as homosexuality, abortion, and the teaching of Creationism in public schools.
As-long as the Republican party adheres to these principles, it will always command blind votes from a vast majority in the United States, and any other radical policies the Republican party proposes will be overlooked in favour of their support for 'Christian morals'.
How Religion can be used to Enforce Totalitarianism
One need look no further than one of the issue facing many countries at the moment. Like China, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom are currently proposing 'Internet filters'. These filters are put forward with support from Christian Conservative lobbyist groups.
In the United States, right-wing fanatics push for filtering so that they can enforce their own moral interpretation from the bible on the general public. Both major political parties support this move.
In Australia, the Christian Conservative 'Family First' party is pushing for Internet filters, using 'protect the children' propaganda and Internet predator terrorism to throw parents into hysteria.
What many people have failed to realize is that Internet filtering gives the government the control over what content people view, and it also gives them the capability to monitor everyone's online activity. So the age old saying "what someone does in the privacy of their own home is their business" no longer applies.
If the government is able to go ahead with these plans (like in China), freedom of speech will be a thing of the past, and totalitarianism will flourish with the new apathetic population, further dumbed down now with only restricted information being allowed to be accessed, while celebrity gossip and social networking sites dominate cyberspace.
